ABOUT THE LANGUAGE GYM

Welcome to The Language Gym!

The Language Gym website was created in the belief that language learning is very much like building strength, flexibility, endurance, muscles and speed in gym sports such as, for example boxing, gymnastics and cross-fit. In this sense, the ultimate aim of the website's existing components, the Verb Trainer, the Grammar and Vocabulary Work-Outs and the Game Room, as well as the upcoming Listening Trainer is to get you "Language Fit".

The Verb Trainer will provide you with valuable practice in the conjugation of French and Spanish verbs. Assisted by the Cheat Sheet (which contains the answers) you will be able to learn how verb endings change from person to person and tense to tense. In no time, by practising only a few minutes a day, you will be able to type verbs fast and accurately. That doesn't mean you will be able to instantly use them in real-life communication, however, it does mean that conjugating verbs will be the least of your worries as you speak or write. This is one of the greatest benefits reported by thousands of our users.

The Grammar and Vocabulary Work-Outs have been designed to gradually expand your command of a wide range of vocabulary through techniques rooted in memory research. Each module recycles the vocabulary over and over again, building a vast network of associations with old and new words, thereby making words "stick". The feedback from our student and teacher users has been outstanding in this respect.

The Game Room, a real hit with all our users, aims at developing different aspects of language proficiency. The following two games are currently available in this section of The Language Gym (and don't worry more and more games will be added as time goes by!)

  • The Boxing Game, on the other hand, is played under severe time constraints in order to develop speed of recognition ‐ a much needed prerequisite for fluency. This is definitely the most popular of our games. Students literally get addicted to it.

  • The Rock-Climbing Game was designed to develop the language-learner's grasp of how the syntax of the target language works, which relates to what psycholinguists call "parsing skills" ‐ a set of skills crucial to comprehension.

New, engaging and fluency-fostering games, such as the Listening Boxing Game ‐ to be implemented next ‐ will be added to the Game Room soon, thereby widening the skills scope of TLG.

Finally, do bear in mind that we are constantly expanding the content of our website. For instance, a section called The Locker Room with plenty of downloadable worksheets authored by renowned award-winning, materials-writer Dr Gianfranco Conti, and co-writers Dylan Viñales and Ronan Jezequel will be implemented soon. A Listening-Trainer Section will also be added after that and lots more will follow, including a primary Mandarin game section. Watch this space!
